Pete Philly & Perquisite was a Dutch hip-hop duo, consisting of the singer Pete Philly and the composer and producer Perquisite (Pieter Perquin), who toured the world with his hip-hop influenced by jazz , broken beat and soul and two has released successful albums.

Life

Beginning

In 1996, at the age of fourteen, Perquisite experimented with hip-hop beats. Due to his background, which is characterized by classical works, he adds elements of this musical direction to his creations. He founded his own label "Unexpected Records" and made his debut in 2001 with the EP The Outta Nowhere , in collaboration with Benjamin Herman. He composes and produces a second solo EP, which will be released in 2002. Clarinetist David Kweksilber can be heard as a guest musician on this EP .

Pete Philly had been an English-speaking MC in the music scene for several years . For example, he works in the bands “Nicotine” and “Gotcha!” And has appeared at festivals such as Mysteryland and North Sea Jazz with them . He makes a name for himself with his powerful live performances and freestyle qualities. At the “Grote Prijs van Nederland” 2002 he received the musician award. He was supported by the then 16-year-old trumpeter Colin Benders, who has since made a career as a Kyteman . Philly is also one of the performers on the “Unsigned” CD from the Nederlands Pop Instituut , alongside other still unknown Dutch hippopots such as Opgezwolle , Lange Frans & Baas B and Raymzter .

In the fall of 2002, Pete Philly and Perquisite met through a mutual friend. It was decided very quickly to work together in the future. This happens initially as an occasional formation "North West Metropolis", whose EP Expressions will be released in 2003 on Perquisites' still existing label "Unexpected Records". After that, they started working for the first time as Pete "Philly & Perquisite" on the EP Mindstate , which was released in January 2004 and which received positive reactions both in the Netherlands and abroad.

Mindstate

Pete & Perq decide to expand the EP into a full album, and so in March / April 2005 Mindstate will follow . The record will initially be released in Japan in collaboration with P-Vine Records, and a month later throughout Europe via license partner Epitaph Europe . The album will later be released in Australia , New Zealand , South Africa , the USA and Canada in cooperation with the American label ANTI-Records . Various guest musicians can be heard on the album, such as the Dutch singer Senna , the MC Cee Major , the American rapper Talib Kweli , saxophonist Benjamin Herman and the guitarist Jesse van Ruller . Mindstate receives a lot of positive reactions from the press at home and abroad. In 2006 the duo received various music prizes, including the Zilveren Harp and an Essent Award . The duo achieved notoriety above all with their eye-catching live performances, accompanied by their 5-man band . The one and a half year tour begins in small halls in the Netherlands, but after appearances in Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Belgium, France, Spain, Italy, Scandinavia and the USA, the club tour finally ends on September 30, 2006 in the sold-out Melkweg in Amsterdam completed. The remix recording Remindstate followed in early 2007 , on which Pete & Perq had various artist friends remix the Mindstate material. This album contains, among others, arrangements by Seiji (UK), C-Mon & Kypski (NL), Collective Efforts (USA), Nicolay (NL), DJ Mitsu (JP), Morgan Spacek (UK), Laidback Luke (NL) and by Perquisite himself.

Mystery Repeats

Pete Philly & Perquisite's second album, Mystery Repeats, will be released on September 10, 2007 . The first single from the Time Flies album is a great success. On April 4, 2008 the duo will be guests at Pauw & Witteman , where they will present their second single Empire live with a string quartet. At the end of August 2008 Pete & Perq made their debut in the Dutch Top 40 with the third single, Mystery Repeats . They are also nominated for the Gouden Notekraker in 2008 and receive the prestigious Amsterdam Prize for Art from the hands of Amsterdam Mayor Job Cohen. In October 2008 Pete & Perq begin an extensive European club tour that will take them through Germany, Austria, Switzerland, France, Sweden, Denmark and the Netherlands. The first three Dutch shows are sold out and the duo and their now 6-man live formation are also starting to fill the halls abroad. In March Pete & Perq are still on a short tour through Japan, in summer they appear at many festivals in Europe, including Splash (Germany), Sziget (Hungary), Lowlands (Netherlands), Gurten (Switzerland) and Exit (Serbia ). This European tour will end with a sold out show in the Amsterdam pop temple Paradiso on December 6, 2008.

A few months later Pete & Perq leave again with their band, this time to the USA for the South by Southwest Festival. During the tour break, Perquisite is working on his first soundtrack for the film Carmen van het Noorden (with Tygo Gernandt, among others ). At the 2009 Utrecht Film Festival, he won the Gouden Kalf film prize after winning the Duiveltje as the best producer in the Netherlands. Pete Philly made his actor debut at the same time in the play "A Man From Nowhere" by the theater group MC.

In September 2009 Pete Philly & Perquisite started their last tour. With a 13-man formation consisting of drums, keyboards, bass, cello, disc jockey, a brass section and a string quartet, Pete Philly & Perquisite are on a theater tour in the Netherlands, which they have named the "Final Celebration Tour". The official last show will take place on October 29, 2009 in the sold-out Rabozaal in Melkweg . Since that day the duo Pete Philly & Perquisite no longer exists.

Dissolution of the duo

The two musicians give several reasons for the breakup, including the many exhausting tours, but also differences of opinion about the further musical direction. All in all, there doesn't seem to be any inspiration for a third album together, so Pete & Perq decide at the height of their careers to end this regardless of the incomprehension of the fans.

Perquisite released the album Across and the EP with the title Set Me Free in October 2010 . Pete Philly released his solo production Open Loops as a free download on the Internet in 2011 and his debut album One in the Netherlands in October of the same year , which has also been available in Germany since the end of January 2012.
