Edward of Norwich, 2nd Duke of York, 1st Duke of Aumale KG (* 1373 presumably in Norwich , † October 25, 1415 at Azincourt ) was a grandson of the English King Edward III.

Life

His parents were Edmund of Langley, 1st Duke of York , fourth son of the English King Edward III. , and his wife Isabella of Castile , daughter of the Castilian King Peter I , the Cruel. His younger brother was Richard of Conisburgh, 1st Earl of Cambridge . Initially Edward carried this title taken over from his father, but he gave it back in 1414.

King Richard II installed Edward as Earl of Rutland in 1390 and as Duke of Aumale in 1397 . After Richard II was deposed in 1399 and Henry Bolingbroke, the eldest son of John of Gaunt , the third son of Edward III. When Henry IV ascended the throne, Edward was stripped of the title of duke due to his personal closeness to the overthrown king. However, through the death of his father in 1402, he easily inherited the title of Duke of York .

Unlike his brother Richard, who tried to overthrow Henry V in 1415 and replace him with a descendant of Lionel of Antwerp , Edmund Mortimer, 5th Earl of March , but was handed over to the king and finally executed, Edward stood loyal to his Lancaster cousin. He accompanied the king to the battle of Azincourt , fell in the thick of the battle and was unable to get up because of the soldiers and horses pushing after. Edward was pushed into the mud of the battlefield and eventually suffocated. He was the highest-ranking loss of the English army during the brilliant victory of Henry V over the French army.

Although there were no descendants from his marriage to Philippa de Mohun († 1431), daughter of the 2nd Baron Mohun , the title of Duke of York did not immediately go to his nephew Richard Plantagenet, 3rd due to his brother Richard's betrayal of Heinrich V Duke of York over. Richard only managed to get the title back in 1425.
