John de Mohun, 2nd Baron Mohun KG (* 1320 - 14 September 1376 ) was an English nobleman and military man.

Life

He was the son and heir of Sir John de Mohun († 1322), the eldest son of John de Mohun, 1st Baron Mohun (1270-1330). His father had fought in the Battle of Boroughbridge and died a little later in Scotland in 1322 . When his grandfather died in 1330, John inherited his Somerset lands as Baron Mohun and lord of the feudal barony of Dunster . Since he was still a minor, Henry Burghersh, Bishop of Lincoln , was installed as his guardian . After his death, John finally got control of his lands in 1341. Around the same time he married the niece of his guardian, Joan Burghersh, daughter of Bartholomew Burghersh, 1st Baron Burghersh († 1355).

In 1341 he was called up for military service against Scotland and, under the command of his father-in-law, took part in a campaign in Brittany in 1342 . After he was responsible for the drafting of troops in Somerset as Commissioner of Array in 1346 , he took part in campaigns in France in the following years , where he was part of the retinue of the Prince of Wales . In 1348 he was taken over by his father, King Edward III. , accepted as a founding member of the Order of the Garter. In the following years he again took part in campaigns in France.

Apparently he got into financial difficulties, at least he gave away his essential estates, including Dunster Castle and Minehead in 1369 in favor of his wife to fiefs .

He died on September 14, 1376 and was buried in Bruton Monastery in Somerset.

From his marriage to Joan he had three daughters:

Since he left no sons, his title fell in Abeyance between his daughters and their descendants. His widow and daughter Elizabeth were inducted into the Order of the Garter as Lady of the Garter in 1384 .
