Walter Fitzwalter, 4th Baron Fitzwalter

Walter Fitzwalter, 4th Baron Fitzwalter (according to another count also 3rd Baron Fitzwalter ) (* 1345 ; † September 26, 1386 ) was an English nobleman and military.

origin

Walter Fitzwalter came from the noble Fitzwalter family . He was a son of John Fitzwalter, 3rd Baron Fitzwalter and his wife Eleanor Percy. His father was a violent man who was dispossessed and imprisoned in 1351 because of numerous feuds and assaults. His father was only released and his property back on payment of a heavy fine. Walter was still a minor when his father died in 1361, his mother also died around this time. He inherited extensive estates in Essex and other parts of England from his father .

Life

Fitzwalter served as a soldier like his ancestors, and he also held numerous local offices in Essex. During the Hundred Years War he took part in the failed Chevauchée of Sir Robert Knolles through northern France in 1370 . He was captured and was only released after paying a ransom of £ 1000. In order to raise this high sum, he had to go into debt, for which he had to cede extensive land as security. In 1377 he was one of the commanders of the fleet with which the Earl of Buckingham attacked a Castilian fleet at Sluys . In 1380 he served as a marshal as a commander during a Chevauchée in Brittany. During the Peasants' Revolt of 1381, many of his Essex estates were burned to the ground by the insurgents, greatly reducing his income. In 1382 Fitzwalter took part as an admiral in another unsuccessful campaign to France. In 1386 he took part in the failed campaign of John of Gaunt against Castile, in which he died in Galicia .

Family and offspring

Fitzwalter's first marriage was on June 23, 1362, Eleanor (Alianore) de Dagworth, a daughter of Thomas Dagworth and Eleanor de Bohun. With her he had a son:

In his second marriage he married Philippa Mohun († 1431), the eldest daughter of John Mohun, 2nd Baron Mohun († 1375). This marriage remained childless. After his death, his widow married Sir John Golafre in a second marriage and, after his death, in a third marriage to Edward of Norwich, Duke of Aumale .
