Baron FitzWalter (also Baron Fitzwalter ) is a hereditary British title of nobility , which was awarded once each in the Peerage of England and the Peerage of the United Kingdom .

The title was created on June 23, 1295 for Robert FitzWalter when he was appointed to the royal parliament by Writ of Summons . As Barony by writ , the title can also be inherited in the female line in the absence of male descendants. Since the 2nd and 6th Barons never took part in a parliament, they are sometimes not counted as Barons Fitzwalter, which can shift the numbering of the following barons.

The title of the 9th Baron was revoked in 1496 for high treason. In 1506 he was restored as the 10th baron for his son. He was raised to Viscount FitzWalter in the Peerage of England on June 18, 1525 and Earl of Sussex on December 8, 1529 . On the death of his great-grandson, the 5th Earl, the Earldom and the Viscountcy fell to his cousin Edward Radclyffe , but the claim to the Barony FitzWalter fell to Henry Mildmay, a descendant of the 2nd Earl's daughter. He and his son of the same name did not succeed in proving his claim effectively, so that they could never take their seat in the House of Lords . Only his younger brother Benjamin Mildmay succeeded in obtaining confirmation of the title in 1667 and taking the seat of parliament.

The 19th Baron was also elevated to Earl FitzWalter and Viscount Harwich , in the County of Essex, on May 14, 1730 in the Peerage of Great Britain . These two titles expired with his childless death in 1756.

From 1756 to 1924 and from 1932 to 1953 the baron title was abeyant .

While the title was abeyant, the title Baron Fitzwalter , of Woodham Walter in the County of Essex , was recreated for Sir Brook Bridges, 5th Baronet , on April 17, 1868 in the Peerage of the United Kingdom . Already since 1829 he had the title Baronet , of Goodnestone in the County of Kent, created in the Baronetage of Great Britain in 1718 . Since he remained childless, this barony was extinguished on his death on December 6, 1875.

Today's title holder of the Barony First Award is Julian Plumptre as 22nd / 20th. Baron.
