William Montagu, 2nd Earl of Salisbury (also William de Montacute ) (born June 20, 1329 - † June 3, 1397 ) was an English military man and magnate.

He was the son of William Montagu, 1st Earl of Salisbury and Catherine Grandison . When his father died in 1344, he inherited his title as 2nd Earl of Salisbury , 4th Baron Montagu and King of the Isle of Man .

As part of the Hundred Years War he was in the royal army, which landed in La Hague in July 1346 . There King Edward III. on July 13, 1346 his heir to the throne Edward of Woodstock to Prince of Wales , who then proposed William to Knight Bachelor . On April 23, 1348 he was accepted by Edward II as a founding member of the Order of the Garter. Between 1355 and 1360 he fought again in France. In 1361 he served as Commissioner of the Peace in Hampshire and Somerset , in 1368 in Dorset and 1380 in Wiltshire . In 1365 he became a member of the Privy Council . In 1367 he was the Commissioner of Array responsible for drafting in Somerset. From 1372 at the latest he was used as a captain in the royal fleet and in 1376 became " Admiral from the mouth of Thames westwards ". In 1378 he fought in Castile and in 1385 in Scotland .

In 1392 he sold his rights to the Isle of Man to William le Scrope , later the Earl of Wiltshire .

Marriages and offspring

Around 1341 he married Joan of Kent , heir to Edmund of Woodstock, 1st Earl of Kent and Margaret Wake, 3rd Baroness Wake . On November 13, 1349, the marriage of Pope Clement VI. canceled due to bigamy , as Joan had already secretly married Sir Thomas Holand .

He later married Elizabeth de Mohun, daughter of John de Mohun, 2nd Baron Mohun and Joan Burghersh. With her he had a son, William Montagu, who married Lady Elizabeth Fitzalan, daughter of Richard FitzAlan, 11th Earl of Arundel , around 1383 , but who died childless on August 6, 1383.

Since he survived his only son, his nephew John Montagu, 2nd Baron Montagu (1350-1400) inherited his title of nobility when he died in 1397 .
