The Edwardson Sound is a fjord on the South Island of New Zealand .
geography
The approximately 12 km long Edwardson Sound is located around 83 km west-northwest of Tuatapere on the southwest coast of the South Island. The sound has a coastline of around 28 km and is around 1.6 km at its widest point. At the northern end of the sound is Lake Cove , which belongs to the sound , and on its east side is the 10 m high Cora Lynn Falls , which in turn are fed by Lake Cadman . The mountains surrounding the sound rise to over 1,100 m .
To the southwest of the entrance to Edwardson Sound is the entrance to Cunaris Sound and access to the Tasman Sea leads south via the Chalky Inlet and the subsequent Eastern Passage .
geology
The Edwardson Sound is in the classic sense a fjord that, like all fjords in the southwest of the South Island, was created on the one hand by glacier movements of the last glacial period and on the other hand by the flooding of the valley by the rising sea level. The name sound came from the first European settlers and seafarers who called numerous valleys in the Fiordland region as sounds , a name that is actually only used for the river valleys flooded from the lake side, such as the sounds in the Marlborough Sounds in the north the south island. The seafarers, mostly of English or Welsh origin, did not know any fjords from their homeland and so they used the names they knew for the inlets, which were later no longer corrected.
