Edwin Ashton (born February 9, 1893 in Hindley , † 3rd quarter 1970 in Bury ) was an English football player .

Career

Ashton is said to have been active as a reserve player with the Bolton Wanderers and won the 1910/11 championship with Haslingden in Division Two of the Lancashire Combination . Around Easter 1912, Ashton, who was presented in the press as a " Lancashire youth", was used as a test player in some games for Grimsby Town . For the first time he ran on in a game in the Midland League between the reserve teams of Grimsby and Leeds City , while he scored a goal in the 2-1 win of Grimsby. After he "confirmed the previous good impressions" in another reserve game in a 5-1 win against Lincoln City , he was - still as a test player - on Easter Monday in a game of the Football League Second Division against Glossop , the The game ended in a goalless draw.

For the 1912/13 season Ashton was signed by Grimsby, previously he is said to have played at Rossendale United . In the pre-season he stood out as a half-striker in an internal test match as part of the B-team, but in September and October 1912 he made another seven appearances in the Football League as a left winger instead of Bill Birch . At the end of December 1912 he was given to the Southern League club Portsmouth FC together with Arthur Mounteney in exchange for Alexander Duncan . At Portsmouth, Ashton came to only two competitive appearances in the Southern League. In the summer of 1913 he left the club for a £ 30 transfer, presumably returning to Haslingden. In late January 1914, Ashton was mentioned as a new player in a Nelson FC match report.
