Edwin Kreuzer

Edwin Jakob Kreuzer (born June 9, 1947 in Ziemetshausen ) is a German mechanical engineer and university professor. From 1993 to 1995 he was Vice President, from 2005 to 2011 President of the Technical University of Hamburg . Since July 1, 2013 he has been President of the Academy of Sciences in Hamburg . In January 2018 he was re-elected for a second term.

Furthermore, Edwin J. Kreuzer is Vice President of the Union of German Academies of Sciences .

Life

After completing an apprenticeship as a toolmaker at Siemens AG in Augsburg, Edwin J. Kreuzer studied mechanical engineering from 1966 to 1971 at what is now the Augsburg University of Applied Sciences and obtained the academic degree of engineering (grad.) . From 1971 to 1976 he continued his mechanical engineering studies at the Technical University of Munich and graduated in 1976 with a diploma. He worked as a research assistant at the B Chair for Mechanics there, before moving to Stuttgart University as a research assistant in 1977 . There Edwin Kreuzer received his doctorate in 1979 with a thesis on the symbolic calculation of the equations of motion of multi-body systems and in 1986 he received his habilitation with his thesis Numerical investigation of nonlinear dynamic systems . He was then appointed to the professorship for nonlinear dynamics there.

Two years later he accepted a position at the Technical University of Hamburg-Harburg (TUHH), initially as a professor for structural dynamics, from 1993 as professor for mechanics at the Institute for Mechanics and Marine Technology at the TUHH, which he held from 1996 until his retirement 2012 headed.

Research priorities

Edwin J. Kreuzer's research focuses on fluid-structure interactions, non-linear dynamics and the dynamics of multibody systems. He also deals with numerical methods of dynamics and branching theory as well as with active dynamic systems and has already published more than 300 articles and monographs on this. Kreuzer is editor or co-editor of the Journal of Applied Mathematics and Mechanics , the Journal of Nonlinear Dynamics and the Journal of Multibody Systems Dynamics .

Offices, Memberships, and Activities

From 1993 to 1995 he was Vice President, from 2005 to 2011 President of the Technical University of Hamburg-Harburg . In this capacity he was also chairman of the Hamburg Rectors' Conference from 2006 to 2011. From 2011 to 2013 he was President of the Hanseatic Engineers Club in Hamburg.

Kreuzer is also a member of numerous specialist societies such as the Society for Applied Mathematics and Mechanics (GAMM), the European Mechanics Society, the European Community on Computational Methods in Applied Sciences (ECCOMAS), the IFToMM Technical Committee for Nonlinear Oscillations (TCNO) and the GAMM Technical Committee "Dynamics and Control Theory". From 1993 to 1996 he was secretary of the GAMM and from 1996 to 2002 he represented Germany as a member of the advisory board for the NATO Advanced Study Institutes.

From 2001 until its dissolution in 2007, Edwin J. Kreuzer was an elected member of the Joachim Jungius Society of Sciences . He has been a corresponding member of the Braunschweig Scientific Society since 2002 and a member of the German Academy of Science and Engineering - acatech, since 2009 . Since it was founded in 2005, he has been a full member of the Academy of Sciences in Hamburg , of which he was a board member from 2006 to 2008 and again since 2012. On July 1, 2013, Edwin J. Kreuzer took over as Heimo Reinitzer's five-year term as President.

Awards and honors

Various visiting professorships have taken Professor Kreuzer to the USA, Brazil and China several times. In 2004 he received an honorary professorship at the Nanjing University of Science and Technology in China.
