Edwin Sandys

Edwin Sandys (* 1519 in St Bees , † July 10, 1588 in York ) was Archbishop of York .

Life

A graduate of Cambridge, he held a number of ecclesiastical offices. Under the reign of Edward VI. he became Vice Chancellor of Cambridge University . Because of his support from Lady Jane Gray (1553) he was temporarily imprisoned, but left England soon and only returned after Elizabeth I ascended the throne . He then became successively Bishop of Worcester (1559), Bishop of London (1570) and Archbishop of York (1577). Although he was a Protestant , he was often at odds with the nonconformists .
