Edwin Schembri

Edwin Schembri (born November 2, 1929 in Cospicua , † October 3, 2009 ) was a Maltese football player on the position of defender .

career

Schembri began his career in 1944 in the youth department of Little Rainbows , a football club from Tarxien . In 1946 he merged with Hibernians FC from neighboring Paola , which is why Schembri played for the Hibernians from then on . When the merger was resolved again in 1949, Schembri stayed with the Hibs , for which he completed a total of 41 point games in the Maltese league between 1948 and 1951 .

In 1951 he moved to Valletta FC , where he developed into one of the best players in post-war Maltese football . In the season 1956/57 Schembri was appointed team captain of the Citizens and under his leadership the capital city won three championship titles and once the cup competition .

When Schembri decided to end his active career at the end of the 1962/63 season, he won the third league title with his club that season and was also voted Footballer of the Year in Malta .
