Edwin Tobler (born May 12, 1922 in St. Gallen ; legal domicile in Teufen AR ) is a Swiss coin collector and numismatist .

Life

Edwin Tobler was born in St. Gallen in 1922, where his parents ran a small delicatessen shop. He grew up in Herisau , where he completed an apprenticeship as a baker and confectioner. To see something of the world, he went to Sweden as a pastry chef for a few years, where he began to be interested in coins. After his return, Tobler worked as a civil servant for the Zurich transport company , initially as a tram conductor and later as a teller. Despite an only average income, Tobler managed to build up a remarkable coin collection of high scientific value. He concentrated on the small coins, which until then had been neglected by collectors, and was able to acquire great rarities for his collection thanks to his outstanding knowledge. Parts of his collection are now in various museums, such as his Schaffhausen coins in the coin collection of the Museum zu Allerheiligen in Schaffhausen . Tobler is considered by experts to be the best connoisseur of Swiss small coinage , perhaps even of modern Swiss coinage in general.

Tobler is widowed, has a daughter and lives in the Zurich Unterland .

Publications
