Eeva-Liisa Manner
Eeva-Liisa Manner (born December 5, 1921 in Helsinki , † July 7, 1995 in Tampere ) was a Finnish poet and translator. She is one of the pioneers of Finnish post-war modernism.
Life
Manner's mother died the day after she was born, she grew up with her grandparents. Manner lived alone and withdrawn. She was interested in ancient mythology as well as psychology and philosophy.
Works
Manner had her breakthrough with her work Tämä matka ("This Journey") in 1956. The book Tämä matka contributed significantly to the establishment of modern writing and poetry in Finland and was the first modernist work to reach a large audience. Manner wrote several collections of poetry, plays and prose, and she worked as a translator. A very Finnish image of nature lives in her poetry, whose external reality includes light, water and forest as well as the animals and plants in their vastness and solitude of Finland. She has u. a. Works by William Shakespeare , Lewis Carroll , Hermann Hesse , Franz Kafka translated into Finnish.
Awards
Manner has received many awards as an author and translator for her extensive work. For example, she was awarded the Finnish State Prize, the most important literary award in the country, seven times.
