The Effengrube is a street in Lübeck's old town .

location

The approximately 80 meter long Effengrube is located in the southwestern part of the old town island, the Marien Quartier . It begins at the southwest corner of the large building yard at the small building yard that bends there , runs in a south-westerly direction down towards the banks of the Trave and finally joins the Obertrave .

history

The Effengrube is mentioned for the first time in 1263 with the Latin name Fossa Offekini , named after a dominus [lat .: Herr] Offeco de Moisling , who, according to information in the oldest Upper Town Book of 1227, owned land here. This designation held up, but went through some reinterpretations and corruptions over the centuries :

  • 1287: Fossa Offekonis
  • 1318: Vicus domini Uffeconis (street of Mr. Offeco)
  • 1350: Offekengrove
  • 1366: Ofkengrove
  • 1400: Effckengrove
  • 1459: Efftkengrove
  • 1460: Offtigengrove
  • 1464: Offigengrove
  • 1477: Huftekengrove
  • 1479: Offtkengrove
  • 1487: Efftegengrove
  • 1588: Eufugengrove
  • 1599: Offtegengrove
  • 1601: Effkengrowe
  • 1608: Efftiengrove

The current name was officially established in 1852.

The historical development on the south side of the Effengrube fell victim to the bombing raid of 1942, with the exception of the Wilhelminian corner house on the Obertrave. The north side, however, has remained closed.
