Egbert van Heemskerk: Drinking Monk

Egbert van Heemskerk II , the Younger (also Egbert Jaspersz. Van Heemskerk ; * around 1634/1635 or 1645 in Haarlem ; † 1704 in London ) was a Dutch peasant painter, genre painter and draftsman. He was the son of the genre painter Egbert van Heemskerk the Elder and a pupil of Pieter Fransz. de Grebber His style, however, was based on the manner of his father and, in particular, on Adriaen Brouwer .

He moved to London early on, where his art was widely recognized, and where he died in 1704. In the choice of his fabrics he fully followed Teniers by painting partly pub scenes and rural amusements, partly the temptations of St. Anthony, witches' meetings and similar haunted scenes.
