The former Gasthof Bären , also known as Fahrgut, is a cultural asset of regional importance and is located in the municipality of Windisch in the canton of Aargau .

Building history and description

The Fahrgut is a two-storey Gothic wing from 1636, which is supplemented by a three-storey representative extension with a clock gable and onion domes from around 1800. The building lies in a traffic key geographical location on the Reuss bridge between Windisch and Gebenstorf near the former Reuss ferry and go to back to the Middle Ages.

In 1534 the ferry owner Hans Biland built a house as an inn and hostel in the Stöcklis Au (now Fahrgut). Before that, there were many disputes about the ferry and the restaurant. As early as 1390, there was evidence of an inn at the ferry in Windischer Unterdorf under the landlord Rutschman von Müllinen (today Mülligen ).

The situation was reorganized in 1415 when Bern replaced all rights of the Königsfelden monastery . Under pressure from the Brugger hosts who fought against the competition on the Reuss , the government decided to close the tavern in the upper Fahr. In 1570, the tavern in Windischer Unterdorf and part of the country were torn away by floods. The former owner sold his tavern rights to the ferryman in the Stöcklis Au (Fahrgut). This secured the existence of the tavern on the upper ferry for the future. Since the well-flourishing Bären economy belonged to a stately farm, various buildings, a barn with stables, a warehouse and another outbuilding were built. From 1820 to 1830, the landlord built an additional house with a laundry room, butcher's and wine shop. The vineyard below the Windischer rectory was also part of the Fahrgut.

In 1834 the canton of Aargau built the first stone bridge with three arches. In 1982 this structure, which could no longer withstand modern traffic, was demolished and replaced by a new construction. The new customs bridge was decorated with the bronze sculpture “Der Flösser” by Eduard Spörri , on the Gibstorf side on the edge of the pedestrian walkway downstream.

The ownership changed with the construction of the spinning mills on the Reuss. The transport goods were taken over by the Kunz spinning mill in 1885 and managed by various tenants. In 1980 the company Rey, Gemüsebau, Birmenstorf bought the entire property. In 1988 the "Alter Bären" building complex was sold to the Haller Heizugen AG community, Brugg. In 2008, the Kühnis couple from Windisch acquired the building, which has meanwhile been listed by the canton of Aargau, with the aim of converting and renovating the bear in accordance with its heritage.
