Ehnisgasse in Esslingen

The Ehnisgasse in Esslingen am Neckar , a town in the district of Esslingen in Baden-Württemberg , is a former medieval street where craftsmen had settled.

The Ehnisgasse was called Metzgergasse until the 16th century. It runs as a small side street parallel to the main street of the historic Pliensauvorstadt , today's Pliensaustrasse. The tax books of the 14th century already show that numerous butchers had settled on Metzgergasse . Since this craft also entailed odor-intensive activities, such professions were often located in the outskirts of cities.

Houses 16, 18 and 20 are protected cultural monuments :

  • The building at Ehnisgasse 16 is a plastered half-timbered house that probably dates from the 13th century.
  • The building at Ehnisgasse 18 is a plastered three-storey half-timbered house from 1298.
  • The building at Ehnisgasse 20 is a plastered half-timbered house with a roof from 1530 over a likely older substructure.

As the last witnesses, the three buildings show the former character of this Esslingen artisan district.
