Bad Bodendorf cemetery of honor
The Bad Bodendorf cemetery of honor is a war cemetery in connection with the nearby Goldene Meile prisoner-of-war camp .
location
It is located north of the Ahr and east of Bad Bodendorf , about 2.5 km from the former warehouse. The distance was probably chosen for reasons of epidemic hygiene. The cemetery was about 0.5 km from the next house in Bad Bodendorf.
history
This cemetery was established on April 28, 1945 by order of the Allies. Most of the dead from the Remagen and Sinzig camps , but also from the Plaidt / Miesenheim and Andernach camps, were buried here.
At that time, Bad Bodendorf was an independent municipality that was assigned to the mayor's office in Remagen . Today it is part of the city of Sinzig.
After the camps were cleared, the cemetery was closed on July 15, 1945. By then 1090 soldiers had found their final resting place there.
The cemetery was consecrated on All Saints Day on November 1, 1945. Residents of the surrounding towns prepared the graves for this holiday - until then, the dead were simply buried in the ground.
When the war cemetery was expanded in 1957, with the participation of the German War Graves Commission , another 154 dead were laid in bed.
The plaque at the entrance, however, indicates 1212 (instead of 1244) grave sites.
Book of the Dead
A list of the graves was laid out in the entrance area. A copy is also available online - see web links.
