The Ehrenhain is a memorial of the city of Bad Schwartau for the victims of the First World War . It is located in the Riesebusch forest on the L 309 north of Bad Schwartau.

history

The honor grove was completed in 1918 by the well-known Lübeck garden architect Harry Maasz . In 1957 an extension followed for the victims of the Second World War .

architecture

Like the Ehrenfriedhof in Lübeck , also created by Maasz, the facility was designed in a strictly geometrical manner and is approx. 120 m long and 50 m wide. Symmetrical and circular interruptions are arranged along an axis running in an east-west direction. At the western end there is the memorial column (an approx. 7 m high column with an embedded cross) with the memorial stones in front of it in a horseshoe-shaped arrangement. There are 91 high memorial stones on both sides of the complex, with 52 lower memorial stones in front of them. Each of these steles contains the name of a fallen man and his / her life dates - with fallen from the same family on the same stele. Due to the need of the post-war period, the memorial stones are simple concrete bodies.

There is an oval pond at the east end . The edging of the individual design elements was made in the form of narrow beech hedges.

Others

In 1918, Bad Schwartau only included the current districts of Schwartau and Kaltenhof - the current districts of Groß Parin, Cleverbrück and Rensefeld are therefore not represented in the complex.
