During the imperial era, a villa colony was built on both sides of Kaltenhöfer Strasse , initially south of Kaltenhöfer Strasse in the Wilhelmstrasse and Bismarckstrasse area. Due to the proximity to the train station, hotels and guesthouses for spa guests settled. The Erbgroßherzog Hotel on the corner of Kaltenhöferstrasse and Nikolausstrasse belonged to them.

Street sign in Kaltenhof

Kaltenhof is now accessible from Schwartauer Markt by the combination Geibelstrasse / Kaltenhöfer Strasse (L 186). At the Kaltenhof exit in the direction of Sereetz is the bridge over the Schwartau river, which has already been straightened and canalized here.

Until the construction of Autobahn 1 in the 1970s, this street connected the Schwartauer Markt with the nearby towns of Sereetz, Lübeck-Dänischburg and Lübeck-Siems . Today the Bad Schwartau triangle (A 1 / A 226 ) cuts the connection.

Origin of name

Memorial plaque for the episcopal Kaltenhof

Kaltenhof was the name of Gut Kaltenhof , an episcopal farm estate on the lower reaches of the Schwartau River, which was abandoned in 1847. The associated land was divided into plots and given to the residents of Schwartau as arable land, which was later cultivated.

The name of the farm was carried over to the Kaltenhof district of Bad Schwartau today, via formerly associated lands.
