The Eibsee is a lake in Chemnitz and part of the nature reserve around the Eibsee .

Location and use

The Eibsee is located on the eastern outskirts of Chemnitz, southwest of Euba . The lake emerged from a quarry from which stones were quarried from 1912 to 1914 for the construction of the Euba dam . From 1926 the lake was used as a nature park, sun, air and swimming pool. At the same time, the area became a training site for the German Reichswehr from 1930 and for the Wehrmacht from 1935 . From 1945 to 1992 the Soviet Army took over this infrastructure for military use.

In 1996 the clearing of the Eibsee began and measures to remove contaminated sites were taken. Among other things, 126 tons of old tires, 80 car wrecks, 50 refrigerators and 760 kg of ammunition were recovered.

Since 1997 the area at the Eibsee has been maintained by the Association for the Promotion of Landscape Management and Nature Conservation (Natur-Hof Chemnitz). This is done through year-round extensive grazing with German Angus cattle and Boer goats .

In 2000 the 39 hectare area was declared a nature reserve around the Eibsee . In addition to the NSG Am Schusterstein and the NSG Am northern Zeisigwald , it is the only nature reserve in the city of Chemnitz.
