Eidum or Eydum was a historical place on Sylt . It was located several hundred meters west of today's coastline from today's district of Westerland .

history

According to historical tradition, the settlement area of Eidum was destroyed several times by storm surges and rebuilt. The All Saints Flood in 1436 probably caused such devastating personal and property damage in the village of Eidum that the surviving inhabitants left it and founded a new settlement about two kilometers to the east. Their choice fell on the higher Geest in what was then Tinnum . This settlement was named Südhedig ; from it emerged today's Westerland. The later name Westerland is said to be derived from an old Tinnum field name on which this new settlement was built; it was the land west of the village, so the "Westerland".

The church tower of the old Eidum, which was preserved after the storm surge of 1436 and is said to be visible for a long time, finally collapsed "at night and in calm weather", according to contemporary representations. The second church had to be abandoned in 1634 or 1635 because of the shifting dunes ; In any case, two months before the Burchardi flood in August 1634 , the Westerlanders applied for aid to build a new church, the St. Niels village church. Construction of this new church began in 1637. The last time the Eidum Church is mentioned on a map by Johannes Mejer in the Chronicle New State Description of the two Duchies of Schleswig and Holstein by Caspar Danckwerth from 1652.

Others

At the north-west corner of the Rantum basin is an old bird bunk , which is called Vogelkoje after the town of Eidum . It is no longer in operation and serves as a nature information center.
