Yellow -crested cockatoo - The hood feathers are limited to the front by elongated forehead feathers

The actual cockatoos ( Cacatua ), also called white and black- billed cockatoos , are a genus within the order of the parrots . This genus includes medium to large species. What they have in common is a white or light salmon-colored to pink basic color of the plumage. They are therefore sometimes referred to as "white cockatoos" to distinguish them from the black cockatoos.

features

Actual cockatoos have short, square tails. The wings are long and almost reach the tip of the tail. A gender dimorphism is either only weakly developed or not present at all. As is characteristic of all cockatoos , they have a feather bonnet. These spring bonnets are shaped slightly differently, so that on the basis of this characteristic it has already been discussed to assign some species to an independent genus. The Moluccan and White-hooded cockatoos , for example, have head feathers that reach a length of over 10 centimeters. In the case of the yellow-crested cockatoo, the yellow-cheeked cockatoo and the Inca cockatoo, the hood is comb-shaped and consists of closely spaced, elongated and slightly forward-curved feathers. The hoods of the other cockatoo species are reminiscent of those of the Moluccan and White-crested cockatoos. However, they are much shorter. However, the proposal to reorganize the actual cockatoos on the basis of their feather bonnets has not yet prevailed, as the different bonnet shapes flow into one another. A classification of the Inca cockatoo has also been suggested on the basis of DNA analyzes. However, more detailed research results are still missing.

In the yellow-hooded , yellow-cheeked and Inca cockatoo , the hoods consist of narrow, elongated feathers bent forward. When blue-eyed cockatoo the hood springs are wider. They are also bent back slightly. For all four types, the hood springs on the front of the head are limited by elongated forehead springs. In the hood shape, this species represents a transition to the White-crested Cockatoo and the Moluccan Cockatoo , in which the feather hood consists of wide, rearward-facing vertex feathers. In the other species, the hood feathers are also bent backwards. In these, however, they are less wide and elongated.

distribution

Actual cockatoos have a very large range. It extends from the Philippines via Sulawesi , the Moluccas and the Sunda Islands to New Guinea and Australia. They can also be found in the Solomon Islands and Tasmania . None of the species occurs in the entire range. The main area of distribution is Australia.
