The actual pygmy falcons ( Microhierax ) are a genus from the falcon-like family (Falconidae). They occur in Southeast Asia and are the smallest representatives of the falcon-like.
The name “Microhierax”, from ancient Greek μικρός ἱεραξ mikros hierax , German “little falcon” , was coined in 1874 by Sharpe .
Features and anatomy
The actual pygmy falcons are the smallest members of the falcon-like, around 15 cm in size and 35 g in weight.

They occur in northeast India and southeast Asia to southern China .
Reproduction
The breeding season usually between March and May. Nests are popular in caves created by woodpeckers or bearded birds .
Food acquisition
These pygmy falcons feed mainly on large insects , especially butterflies or dragonflies , also on smaller birds or lizards .

The genus of the true pygmy falcon consists of 5 species.
Originally four species were described by Sharpe, a fifth, the white- crowned falcon ( Microhierax latifrons ) was added by him in 1879.

- Finchfinch ( Microhierax fringillarius ) (Drapiez, 1824), Malay Peninsula and Great Sunda Islands
- White- crowned falcon ( Microhierax latifrons ), Sharpe, 1879, Borneo
- Two-colored falcon ( Microhierax erythrogenys ), (Vigors, 1831), Philippines
- Magpie falcon ( Microhierax melanoleucus ), (Blyth, 1843), northeast India to southern China and Vietnam
