The two-colored falcon ( Microhierax erythrogenys ) is a bird from the falcon-like family (Falconidae).
The bird is endemic to the Philippines , particularly Luzon , Mindanao , Mindoro, and Visayas .
The distribution area includes open, moist forest areas, clearings and forest edges, near rivers, mostly above 300 to 1200 m.
description
The two-colored falcon is 15-18 cm tall, weighs between 37 and 52 g, the wingspan is 32-37 cm. The sexes do not differ in their coloring. The upper side is completely black, the nape and crown also black, cheeks, throat and the underside are white. The otherwise similar Elsterfälkchen is larger and has black with white borders on the cheeks. The wings end pointed, the tail is rounded and of medium length. The strong beak has a clear hook, the claws are relatively large and sharp.

The call of the male is described as a repetitive, slightly squeaking, hissing call.
Geographic variation
Avibase distinguishes between the following subspecies due to differences in size:
- Microhierax erythrogenys erythrogenys ( Vigors , 1831), nominate form , - North of the Philippines (Luzon, Mindoro, Negros and Bohol)
- Microhierax erythrogenys meridionalis Ogilvie-Grant , 1897, - South of the Philippines (Samar, Leyte and Cebu to Mindanao)
Others see the species as monotypical .
Way of life
The diet consists mainly of insects , dragonflies , but also lizards . He hunts from a fixed position, smaller insects and birds are caught in flight, others on trees or on the ground.
The breeding season is between March and May (to June) and September to February. Nests are made in abandoned tree hollows created by woodpeckers or bearded birds at a height of 6 to 10 m. The clutch consists of 3 to 4 eggs.

The stock is not considered to be at risk ( least concern ).
