A lonely grave , also known under the title Die Tat der Gräfin Worms , is a German silent film drama from 1916 by Karl Gerhardt based on a screenplay by Joe May with his wife Mia May in a double role.

action

Countess Worms loves her husband's friend, Prince Heinz von der Esche. However, he does not want to be a disruptive factor in this marriage and succumb to the countess' erotic temptations and therefore sets off on a journey. Nevertheless, the countess desperately wants to be free for the prince and therefore kills her unloved husband without further ado. There is a trial and a death sentence is pronounced. The petition for clemency from the sovereign remains unsuccessful. After the execution, Lilly Worms, the Countess's daughter, is awarded to the brother of the dead, Count Egon, who already has his own daughter of about the same age in Felicitas. With the two young women and his wife, Egon goes on an extended trip to Cairo in order to gain some distance.

18 years later. Felicitas and her mother, Egon's wife, died shortly after arriving in Cairo, and so he raised Lilly as his own daughter, Felicitas. As part of a big festival, Fürst von der Esche, who after the brutal death of Countess Worms had withdrawn completely from the public and lived as a single, met Lilly alias Felicitas. The child has become a beautiful young woman. Even after he found out that Felicitas is really Lilly, he wants to marry her. The young woman, who was previously unaware of her mother's execution, accepts his application. Because of the jealousy of the princely librarian's daughter, Felicitas found out everything about her mother on her wedding day, of all places. She believes that the newlywed husband is complicit in her terrible end, and hurries to Mother's lonely grave to die there too. At the last moment, Heinz can stop her from performing an act of desperation in the count's tomb.
