The dugout of Jemgum in 2009 during an excavation at the natural gas storage of Jemgum in the Leer district in Lower Saxony exposed. It is the front part of a dugout canoe made of oak . The stern was cut off. The length obtained is about 4.7 meters.

Presumably a creek flowed into the Ems at the place of discovery , which was closed with a dam and a sluice . The dugout canoe was built into the dam after its actual use. It had been locked in place with a wooden post and an opening was made in the fuselage.

While the Siel dates to the Roman Empire , the 14C measurements show that the dugout canoe dates from the 7th century AD. The time discrepancy cannot be explained.

In the last 100 years, nine dugout canoes or other watercraft have been discovered in East Frisia , but none has survived. The Jemgum dugout canoe is the oldest surviving watercraft in East Frisia.
