A great love is a German music film by Hans Bertram from 1949 .

action

The noble Sabine marries her middle-class childhood friend under her class. When he did not return from the 1st World War for a long time, it slipped more and more into the demi-world. Only in old age do the two find each other again.

background

Hans Bertram wrote the script together with his wife Gisela Uhlen , who also played the leading role. Their daughter, Barbara Bertram , made her film debut at the age of four. As in Symphony of a Life (1942), film music was of particular importance and dialogues were used sparingly. For a daily fee of 15 Marks, over 500 extras from the city in historical clothes that they had brought with them took part in the ball scenes, which for cost reasons were not filmed in backdrops but directly in the Kurhaus Baden-Baden . Historic crowd scenes were also filmed with the population on the market square of Linz am Rhein , near the film studio in Remagen.

publication

A great love opened with its world premiere in the 1949/50 season in the Berlin Marble House and was immediately canceled. The audience had expressed their displeasure through ironic clapping, laughing and scolding and could not be reassured even by four-year-old Barbara Bertram and her mother in the film dress. The film also failed in Hamburg. However, he was sold to Sweden at the Cannes Film Festival. In Austria it was released in cinemas under the title Sabine .

Reviews

"The awkwardly staged melodrama is ... a failure."

- Cinegraph

“The film wasn't just laughed at for its helpless symbols and whiny plot. Bertram wants to force poetry as if in slow motion. It takes a quarter of an hour until a glass of cognac is meaningfully brought to your lips. "

- The mirror

“Anyone who recently saw in the film“ A Great Love ”that an unusually talented actress like Elisabeth Flickenschildt has got used to false and pathetic theater sounds since we haven't seen her in Berlin, must make sure that the film is a Keeper and keeper of the real talents remains. "
