The Camdens are presented. The family, which consists of seven members, lives in Glen Oak, California. Evangelical pastor Eric and housewife Annie enjoy a very loving and happy marriage while they raise their five children while they are: the rebellious Matt (16) who secretly smokes but then gives up; the sporty Mary (14), who is eagerly waiting for her first kiss and wants to know Matt's experiences; the emotional Lucy (12) who is depressed about missing her first period; the curious Simon (9), who desperately wants a dog and gets it from Happy the dog; and the small and lovable Ruthie (5), who has not given her parents any major problems. Eric and Annie's children keep them busy with their various problems. And as if that wasn't enough, Annie learns that her mother has been diagnosed with acute leukemia and she refuses to seek treatment. | |||||||

Annie fears that her mother's condition will worsen if she postpones her visit for a weekend; so she gets on the next plane to Phoenix, Arizona to stop by her parents. With Annie traveling to see her parents, Eric is in charge of the house and has to take care of the children, which leads to some delicate situations. Lucy starts dating Jimmy Moon. Annie feels left alone when her father decides to go straight back to Phoenix after her mother's funeral. Mary feels hemmed in by Jeff and considers breaking up with him. Simon gets on everyone's nerves with a tough question: where is heaven / paradise? Elsewhere, Matt has to help Renee while she gives birth because the child's father cannot be reached. When an African-American church nearby was burned down by an unknown racist group, the Camdens decided to temporarily take in their friend Reverend Morgan Hamilton and his family of six until they felt safe in their own home again. They also decided to have a joint service temporarily on Sundays in the Camden Church. In the midst of these tragic and hateful events, the children of the two families decide to defend their friendship and thereby fight a racist society. Meanwhile, Eric and Annie must find a solution to the marital difficulties between Morgan and Patricia, whose relationship is not quite as amorous and romantic as their own. | |||||||

Mary doesn't want her family to attend an important basketball game because she's afraid she'll get more nervous. Because the family is not wanted at the game, they are not sure what to do that day. Most notably, Lucy loses her younger siblings while she is supposed to be these baby mores. Eric tries to persuade a drug addict teen into rehab. After all, the whole family, with the exception of Lucy, is in the audience of Mary's basketball game. As part of a basketball team ritual at her school, Mary has to steal a drinking glass from a fast food restaurant. Eric wants Matt to bring the glass back and apologize. The owner of the restaurant accuses him of theft despite returning it and faces jail time. Lucy gets herself in trouble by submitting a term paper that is a one-to-one copy of the one Mary once made. After Eric gets upset about people who can't read the national anthem and says that these people should be expelled from the country, Ruthie gets scared and with the help of Simon immediately learns the anthem by heart. | |||||||

All three Camden generations fear the annual visit of Eric's parents: "The Colonel" and Grandma Ruth Camden. While Annie & Eric and Patricia & Morgan Hamilton spend a romantic Valentine's Day camping out, the kids are alone with the Camdens. Matt is in charge of the rest of the family. Matt and John Hamilton make plans for a double date at the Camdens home. Mary and Keesha Hamilton's plans to invite a couple of friends over to watch a couple of movies get out of hand and end with a big party at the Camdens. Matt and John start neglecting their dates to keep the party under control. During all of this, Happy slips out of the house to find her pups that the Camdens gave up a short time before. Mary has to detention and meets Camille, a schoolgirl who doesn't think much of rules. Eric wants to hire an ex-convict as a new organ player, but the church prefers to put the money into a new security system, which Eric doesn't want. As the incumbent church treasurer, Annie must determine whether the budget for a new organist is available.
Meanwhile, Lucy asks Mary to tutor her boyfriend Jimmy Moon. But Lucy quickly realizes that she becomes very jealous when she sees Mary and Jimmy alone together. Matt is supposed to get Simon to get vaccinated against tetanus, even though he's scared of it himself. Finally, Ruthie feels empowered by her new class phone list and decides to test the emergency numbers. |

Eric's parents visit the Camdens and also bring their adoptive son George with them. They want to pick Julie up from rehab. She still feels very insecure. When George's biological father suddenly shows up and wants George back, the problems arise. The grandparents fall back into old patterns and become less friendly again. The Colonel blames Julie for everything. Ultimately, the grandparents return to Buffalo with George, Julie and George's biological father and want to raise George together. Lucy is not very enthusiastic about her new hair color and advises Simon to run for his life. Mary meets a young man named Wilson, who at first looks like a normal teenager. Matt also meets an attractive woman named Heather, who flirts with him at first, but does not react when he speaks to her. When Annie's father brings Ginger to church, Annie escapes. After Mary came to the hospital, she had to undergo knee surgery and the doctors determined that her exercise could be at risk from the injury. Wilson stands by her and confesses that he has no brother but a son named Billy. Jimmy Moon doesn't like Lucy's blonde hair and they part in an argument. Matt learns that Heather is deaf and has not spoken to him because of it. He wants to try to learn sign language as quickly as possible. Annie is still not on good terms with her father, but with the help of Mrs. Bink both parties get along again. And Annie tries to accept Ginger in the family circle. |

As a result of this incident, Eric forbids Mary and Lucy to have guests, but he changed his mind when he met Lucy's new friend Rod and he answered a few questions about drugs well. Simon swears to his friend Stan that he is keeping a secret: Stan's sister Karen is a member of a street gang called Blackburn 16. After Stan had a nightmare while staying at the Camden's, Eric and Annie are puzzled. When Karen goes to pick Stan up at the Camden's, Matt notices that she's wearing a capital B for a belt buckle. She says it stands for her nickname "Baby Doll". Matt ultimately learns Simon's secret and, against Simon's wishes, tells everything to the parents. Lucy looks excited when her mother and Mary catch her strolling through the mall with her friends in daring clothes. | |||||||

Eric is frustrated that he no longer fits into his old jeans. He decides to go jogging and adjust his diet. But he can't keep it up and sends Matt to get him some cheeseburgers. Matt is supposed to arrange a meeting between her and his friend Brian at Mary's request, but Brian is not really interested. Since Matt doesn't feel like arguing with Mary, he gives Brian $ 20 for a date with Mary. On the date Brian discovers feelings for Mary, but she gets behind the bargain and is pissed off with Matt and Brian. Lucy was invited to her overnight party by Beverly, a popular classmate. Beverly and her friends want Lucy to hide under the bed while the unsuspecting Shelby shares her opinion about Lucy. Lucy is hurt by Shelby's words, but quickly finds out that Shelby doesn't really agree. | |||||||

A television team is scheduled to televise the Sunday service. Annie does all of the work for her husband so that he can concentrate fully on writing the sermon. But Eric has writer's block now of all times. Plus, things are haywire at Camden. Lucy failed her last history exam, Mary wants to stop her training and give up her sports career out of jealousy of the new teammate Diana, and the magician Simon and his assistant Ruthie argue because Ruthie wants to do magic herself. When the Colonel gets wind of this, he travels as quickly as possible and takes the problems in hand. He takes care of the house, learns history with Lucy, convinces Mary not to give up her sports career and helps Eric overcome his writer's block. The service that is being televised is ultimately interrupted by Ruthie when she drops a peppermint in her nose and has to go to the hospital. | |||||||

Annie and Eric want to find out why nearly $ 3,000 is missing from the church treasury. Lou, the church treasurer, had taken the money to help his mentally challenged son. Mary gets along great with her basketball coach, Mr. Koper, while Matt suffers in his English class. Lucy watches a very close hug from Mary and Mr. Koper and tells her brother about it. Matt reports to the school administration and accuses Mr. Koper of more than friendship with Mary. Mary is not very enthusiastic about the accusation and there is a scandal between the siblings. Mary is on Mr. Koper's side and only later realizes that he wants more from her than just friendship. However, Annie and the principal catch him trying to get close to Mary. Simon discovers his passion for golf and first breaks two windows. Ruthie takes the second window pane on her cap, but Simon cannot agree with himself and confesses everything to his parents. | |||||||

After Lucy learns that her ex-boyfriend Jimmy Moon broke up with his girlfriend Ashley, she is torn between him and Rod. Both have their eye on her and constantly ensnare her, which she actually likes quite a lot. The siblings and grandpa Charles, who has come to visit with a toupee that divides the family's opinions, place bets on who Lucy will choose. Eric and Annie hold marriage counseling for three newlyweds who all have their own unique relationship problems. But Annie and Eric are also currently arguing about an important problem: Should the family be buried in their parents' grave later on? The two have the opportunity to give practical lessons in conflict resolution to the young couples. | |||||||

Free coupons give Camdens a good reason to try lunch at a new restaurant, but the coupons are for one dish only, kidney stew. Eric is intrigued by a little boy named Clarence whom he meets at the local food outlet. Eric follows the boy to find out why he needs to go to the food counter. He learns that his mother is Harriet, the waitress from the restaurant. Eric learns of the family's financial problems caused by Harriet's runaway husband. Annie is concerned about politeness and makes her children at home keep saying “please” and “thank you”. In an argument with a saleswoman about a broken sweatshirt, Annie also struggles with hard bandages. A mysterious personal ad in the school newspaper brings Matt more admirers than he can handle. He suspects Mary and Lucy, but they have nothing to do with it. | |||||||

The only thing preventing Mary from returning to the basketball court after her knee surgery is the fear of her comeback failure. But with the support of her entire family, Mary manages to return to her old achievements. Because Ruthie is afraid that something might go wrong on her first school trip, Annie decides to come as a volunteer parent. Simon has problems too. He firmly believes that the physics teacher Ms. Hunter hates him. He'd rather play sick than take one more class. Lucy and her friend Suzanne still haven't got a date for the school party. But Suzanne has much bigger problems, as Eric soon realizes. She ran away from home because she felt neglected by her mother's new boyfriend and his daughters. Before Matt and John say goodbye to college, the Camdens and Hamiltons want to have one more dinner together. But everyone has something else in mind. Only Ruthie and Lynn, who are currently falling out, eat with Annie and Patricia. When they go to the cinema, Annie and Patricia witness how Lucy and Keesha kiss two boys uncontrollably. Simon and Nigel were invited to a "cuddle party" where Simon is confronted with his first kiss, which the parents of the party organizer do not like to see. Mary meets with a boy about Lucy's age and is quick to regret accepting the date. Meanwhile, fathers Eric and Morgan meet in secret with Patricia's first husband Kevin. Morgan tries to dissuade Kevin from calling on Valentine's Day every year; but when he sees the paralyzed Kevin, he changes his plan and gives his wife a surprise.
