The monochrome ant strangler ( Thamnophilus unicolor ), syn. Dysithamnus unicolor , belongs to the genus Thamnophilus within the ant bird family (Thamnophilidae) .
The species occurs in Ecuador , Colombia and Peru .
The range includes humid tropical or subtropical mountain forests and forest edges from 1200 to 2200 m altitude and is thus one of the few species of birds that have adapted to higher habitats .
The Latin additional species means monochrome.
features
The bird is of medium size with a strong hooked bill and pronounced sexual dimorphism . The male has a pale iris , a black beak, is otherwise slate-gray with no special features, the head is slightly darker. Sometimes the outer control springs have small white tips. The female has a gray face, is otherwise chestnut-colored on the upper side and ocher-colored plumage on the underside. Young birds look like females.
Geographic variation
The following subspecies are recognized:
- T. u. unicolor ( PL Sclater , 1859), nominate form - Pacific side of Ecuador
- T. u. grandior Hellmayr , 1924 - Colombia to eastern Ecuador and northern Peru
- T. u. caudatus Carriker , 1933 - Eastern side of the Andes in Peru
voice
The call is described as a nasal tone sequence with 5 even sounds "awh awh".
Way of life
The food presumably consists of insects , which are looked for near the ground and quietly, sometimes in mixed hunting communities.
Little is known about the breeding season.
Hazardous situation
The stock is not considered to be at risk ( least concern ).
