The Ministry of Immigration in Australia (English: Department of Immigration ) is one of the most important Australian government departments and can point to a long tradition. It was established as an independent ministry for the first time in 1945. The currently ruling national liberal government under Malcolm Turnbull orients its migration and asylum policy towards rigid immigration detention and strict coastal protection against asylum-seeking boat people .

Currently (as of April 2017) the Ministry is called the Department of Immigration and Border Protection and is led by Minister Peter Dutton from the Liberal Party of Australia .

Historical development

After the Commonwealth of Australia was formed in 1901 , immigration issues were dealt with by subdivisions of different ministries, such as the Foreign, Trade and Home Office.

From July 1945, an independent immigration ministry was established for the first time under the direction of Arthur Calwell . Calwell advocated massive immigration of people of only European origin. He was a staunch opponent of immigration from other ethnic groups and pursued a racist White Australia Policy that is still effective today.

Current Ministry of Immigration from 2013

When the national liberal government under Tony Abbott came to power in 2013, the Department of Immigration and Citizenship led by the Labor Government under Prime Minister Kevin Rudd was renamed the Department of Immigration and Border Protection and given different political priorities.

The labor-ruled ministry defined its work priorities in addition to immigration , border controls , citizenship , and also in the area of ethnic and multicultural matters. The currently incumbent immigration ministry also sees its priorities, but does not explicitly mention multicultural issues.

In political practice, the currently incumbent ministry (as of April 2017) is characterized by strict border protection, especially on the coast, and rigid immigration detention vis-à-vis boat people ( Operation Sovereign Borders ).

In a brochure published by the Australian Department of Immigration in 2015 on the occasion of the seventieth anniversary of its existence, entitled “A History of the Department of Immigration”, the department concluded that it had become an integral part of the “ economic prosperity, national security and social harmony of Australia ”.
