Joachim Rohweder (born September 2, 1841 in Wapelfeld , † December 29, 1905 in Husum ) was a German ornithologist and senior teacher .

Life

Rohweder was born as the son of a farmer on September 2nd, 1841 in Wapelfeld. He worked as a senior teacher at the Royal High School in Husum. Rohweder attended the local village school and then the higher boys' school in Hohenwestedt . He decided to work as a teacher. He found his first job as an assistant teacher at a private school in Hamburg . There the library of the Hamburg “Association for Teacher Friends” was available to him. He also heard lectures at the Johanneum .

In 1862 he began studying at the teachers' college in Bad Segeberg . He was particularly interested in the natural sciences . He graduated with honors in 1865. This was followed by a position as a private tutor in the house of a district judge in Leck , then as the first assistant teacher at the Naval School in Flensburg . On October 1, 1866, he finally became a full teacher of natural sciences at the high school in Husum. He worked there until his death in 1905. He died on December 29, 1905 in Husum.

Rohweder became known for his extensive knowledge of the bird world in northern Germany. He was often asked for by the authorities as a reviewer, and his little book: The birds of Schleswig-Holstein and their distribution in the province, along with a graphic representation of their migration and breeding conditions , developed into a standard work in ornithology. In comparison with current developments, his observations are still interesting today. For example, the State Agency for Nature Conservation Schleswig-Holstein uses it when drawing up the Red List of Schleswig-Holstein's breeding birds . Rudolf Blasius published his ornithological legacy in the Ornithological Monthly .

Joachim Rohweder campaigned for animal welfare and wanted to preserve the bird world in its original state. On his initiative, bird protection measures on the North Frisian Islands were implemented by the Schleswig-Holstein government. In 1879 he was a co-founder of the animal welfare association Husum and the surrounding area. At the same time he was, like many people of his time, even hunters , who, for example, in 1872, a spotted eagle - Terzel shot and a clutch pulled out through a hole drilled from the bottom hole a freshly laid egg, which meant that the nest was abandoned .

In 1893 the royal government of Schleswig-Holstein sent him to Heligoland . There he should check bird trapping and make suggestions to stop abuse. The animal protection association of the German Reich later gave him a similar assignment .
