Population development
In the 19th century, due to industrialization, the population growth in Aachen increased. In 1816 the city still had 32,000 inhabitants, the number of inhabitants exceeded the limit of 100,000 in 1888, making it a major city . On January 1, 1897, was carried incorporation of the district town Burtscheid (15,871 inhabitants in 1895) from the district Aachen , which was the seat of the district administration. In 1939 Aachen had 162,000 inhabitants.
The effects of the Second World War are clearly visible . The Allied air raids destroyed 65 percent of the apartments. Aachen was forced to evacuate on September 11 and 12, 1944 , after which only 6,000 people lived in the city. On October 21, 1944, after six weeks of fighting ( Battle of Aachen ), Aachen was the first West German city to be captured by the Allies. At that time the city had 11,139 inhabitants. But as early as December 1945, the return of the forced evacuees caused the population to exceed 100,000 again.
The city experienced a population increase of around 63,000 people on January 1, 1972 due to several incorporations - the population rose from 177,000 to around 240,000. The increase of 9,000 people in 2003 is due to the fact that the city introduced the second home tax in the same year , which particularly motivated many students to exchange their second home for a main residence with the city administration . In 2006, the city with 258,770 inhabitants was 27th among the major German cities and 13th within North Rhine-Westphalia.
The following overview shows the number of inhabitants according to the respective territorial status. Up to 1812 these are mostly estimates, then census results (¹) or official updates by the city administration (until 1970) and the State Statistical Office (from 1971). From 1834 the information relates to the “customs clearance population”, from 1871 to the “local population”, from 1925 to the resident population and since 1987 to the “population at the place of the main residence”. Before 1834, the number of inhabitants was determined according to inconsistent survey methods.
