Population development of Augsburg
This article gives the development of the population of Augsburg in tabular and graphical form.
Population development
After over 12,000 people had already lived in Augsburg at the time of the Roman Empire , the number of inhabitants grew only imperceptibly in the following centuries. Around 1500 it was one of the largest cities of the Holy Roman Empire with a population of around 30,000 after Cologne and Prague .
In the Thirty Years War the city lost about two thirds of its inhabitants. The population fell from 48,000 before the war to 16,432 (731 of them foreigners) in the 1635 census. In the 18th century, the population grew only very slowly and kept falling due to wars, epidemics and famine.
Only with the beginning of industrialization in the 19th century did a strong population growth set in. In 1852 almost 40,000 people lived in the city, in 1895 there were over 80,000. In 1909, the population of the city of Augsburg exceeded the limit of 100,000, making it a major city . Between 1911 and 1916, the city's population grew by around 45,000 people due to the incorporation of several neighboring towns. By 1939 the population had risen to 185,000.
The effects of the Second World War are clearly visible . Augsburg suffered severe damage as a result of the Allied air raids , as the production facilities of important armaments companies were located here, including Messerschmitt AG and MAN. In the devastating attack by the British bomber command alone on the night of February 25th to 26th, 1944, 730 people died and large parts of the city center were destroyed. Overall, Augsburg lost around 20 percent of its population (38,958 people) through evacuation, flight, deportations and air strikes. The population fell to 146,000 by 1945 and then rose again to the pre-war level by 1950.
1956 lived in Augsburg 200,000 people. The incorporation of several cities and municipalities in the course of the regional reform in Bavaria in 1972 brought an increase in population from around 43,000 to 257,000. With 266,647 inhabitants, Augsburg reported a historic high as of December 31, 2011 (after the previous high of 264,852 on December 31, 1992) of the official population. As of December 31, 2011, 266,608 people, including 137,738 women (51.7%), reached a new high among residents registered with their main residence in Augsburg.
On June 30, 2016, 290,743 people were registered in the city of Augsburg. Since May 2011, the number of the population entitled to live has always been above the value of the previous month, so it has increased every month. The mark of 290,000 inhabitants was exceeded in April 2016. The population growth is due to an increasing excess of external migration. The number of people who moved in has risen continuously since 2010 from 17,482 to 25,618 people (+ 45.5%) in 2015. Since the number of outward journeys increased less strongly in this period (by 25.0% from 16,136 to 20,169), the annual increase in migration increased since 2010 from 1,346 to 5,449 in 2015. The proportion of people who moved from Bavaria has remained almost unchanged over the past six years. The number of immigrants from EU countries has more than doubled from 2,059 to 5,665. The number of people with Romanian citizenship rose above average, displacing those with Croatian citizenship as the third largest in Augsburg in 2012 and those with Italian citizenship as the second largest group of foreigners in Augsburg in 2014.
The following overview shows the number of inhabitants according to the respective territorial status. Until 1827 it is mostly an estimate, then census results (¹) or official updates from the State Statistical Office. From 1834 the information relates to the “customs clearance population”, from 1871 to the “local population”, from 1925 to the resident population and since 1987 to the “population at the place of the main residence”. Before 1840, the number of inhabitants was determined according to inconsistent survey methods.
The development of the Augsburg population from 1852 to 2008, differentiated according to official and eligible population and population at the location of the main residence and according to gender, can be found in the statistical yearbook of the city of Augsburg.

Population forecast
The Office for Statistics and Urban Research of the City of Augsburg published its last small-scale population forecast in 2016. It is expected that the population entitled to live will rise to over 305,000 by 2030, with the 300,000 mark already being exceeded in 2019 and then the population growth slowing. The basis for this is that the number of immigrants will be roughly the same as between 2010 and 2015 and will continue to be higher than the number of departures.
