Population development
In the Middle Ages and the early modern period in Mülheim only a few hundred people lived. The population grew very slowly and kept falling due to the numerous wars, epidemics and famine. On February 18, 1808, the city was granted city rights under French law . At that time Mülheim had a little more than 5,000 inhabitants. With the beginning of industrialization in the middle of the 19th century, population growth accelerated. In 1846 only 10,000 people lived in the city, by 1900 there were already 38,000.
On May 1, 1901, the urban district of Mülheim an der Ruhr was formed. On January 1, 1904, the population of Mülheim doubled from around 40,000 to over 93,000 after the incorporation of several localities. The following municipalities were incorporated (residents 1895): Broich (5,707), Holthausen (2,566), Saarn (4,424), Speldorf (5,886) and Styrum (13,178).
As a result of ongoing immigration, the city's population exceeded the limit of 100,000 in 1908, making it a major city . On April 1, 1910, Dümpten (1895 = 6,473 inhabitants) and Heißen (1895 = 6,002 inhabitants) were incorporated, and Menden and Raadt were incorporated on July 1, 1920. A census on June 16, 1925 gave Mülheim a population of 127,195. On August 1, 1929, the urban area was expanded considerably to the south with the incorporation of Selbeck, Ickten and parts of circumstances, but only brought an increase of 1,381 people.
During the Second World War , the city was repeatedly targeted by Allied air raids. The heaviest attack in the night of June 22nd to 23rd, 1943 resulted in 530 deaths among the city's population. Around 40,000 residents then had to be evacuated. American troops took the city on April 11, 1945. At that time only just under 88,000 people lived in Mülheim, but by 1947 the number had increased to the pre-war level of 138,000 due to war returnees, refugees and displaced persons.
In 1971 the population reached its historic high of 192,915. On December 31, 2006, the " official population " for Mülheim was 169,414 according to updates by the State Office for Data Processing and Statistics North Rhine-Westphalia (only main residences and after comparison with the other state offices ).
