Eisai ( Japanese エ ー ザ イ 株式会社 , Ēzai Kabushiki kaisha ; Engl. Eisai Co., Ltd. ) is a global pharmaceutical company from Japan, which is listed on the Nikkei 225 , ISIN JP3160400002 and is headquartered in Tokyo (Japan). The company was founded in 1941 as Nihon Eisai KK ( 日本 衛 材 株式会社 , Nihon Eisai Kabushiki-gaisha ) and was given its current name in 1955.
Eisai sells both prescription and OTC drugs . Two of the better-known drugs that Eisai developed are the antidementia drug donepezil (trade name Aricept ) and the proton pump inhibitor rabeprazole (trade names : Pariet ( DE , CH ), Aciphex (e.g. USA)). In oncology , Eisai sells both eribulin ( Halaven ) and lenvatinib ( Kisplyx , Lenvima ; renal cell carcinoma ).

- 1944: Sakuragaoka Laboratory Co., Ltd. and Nihon Eisai Co., Ltd. merge under the name Nihon Eisai Co., Ltd.
- 1955: The company changes its name from Nihon Eisai Co., Ltd. in Eisai Co., Ltd., the name that continues to this day.
- 1961: Eisai is listed on the Tokyo and Osaka stock exchanges .
