Iron-nickel alloy

Iron-nickel alloys (FeNi) are a group of alloys that largely consist of iron and nickel . They belong to the ferro-alloys .

Iron meteorites , like the inner core of the earth , mostly consist of an iron-nickel alloy with 4 to 30% nickel. Also minerals like Awaruit , Antitaenit , Kamacite , taenite and Tetrataenit are iron-nickel alloys.

Some of the alloys such as Permalloy (81% nickel) or Audiolloy (48% nickel) are good for magnetic shielding because of their high permeability . The Invar alloy with around 36% nickel, in turn, is characterized by very low thermal expansion . Alloys with about 29% nickel are non-magnetic and are used in mechanical engineering for components that must not be magnetizable.

As ferronickel , an alloy containing 20 to 60% nickel, and 1 to 2% cobalt , 1.5% to 2% carbon and in a small amount (<0.3%) sulfur designated consisting of oxide ores is recovered and the Steel production is used. Its inferior variant is the nickel pig iron (Nickel Pig Iron) having from 4 to 13% nickel.
