The Bremgarten Railway Bridge is a single-track railway bridge in Bremgarten , Switzerland . The three-span, from concrete manufactured arch bridge spanning over a length of 156 meters, the Reuss . It has been part of the meter-gauge line of the Bremgarten-Dietikon-Bahn (BD) since 1912 and is located between the Isenlauf stops on the south and Obertor on the north side. The route has a constant gradient of 4.5% to the north.

history

The railway line from Wohlen via Bremgarten to Dietikon was initially divided into two parts. The first thing that opened on September 1, 1876, was the standard gauge Wohlen-Bremgarten Railway , a branch of the Aargau Southern Railway . However, the Bremgarten West terminus was far outside the city center and there was no rail connection to Zurich . For this reason, an electric tram to Dietikon was built a quarter of a century later , starting at Obertor and opening on May 1, 1902.

The construction of the missing section between Bremgarten West and Obertor was initially abandoned due to the high construction costs for a bridge. The BD initially planned a route through the narrow streets of the old town, but this had various disadvantages: a longer detour, a gradient of over 9% and the necessary replacement of the covered wooden bridge with a new stone bridge. In the end, however, the direct route with a new bridge to be built prevailed.

The company Locher & Cie emerged as the winner of the project competition . After the board of directors had decided to take out a loan and the construction project had been approved by the cantonal authorities, construction began in February 1911. The project, estimated at CHF 700,000 , also included the installation of an additional meter gauge track on the Wohlen – Bremgarten line and its electrification . Completion was delayed by four months, and construction costs rose to 1.467 million Swiss francs. Continuous operation between Wohlen and Dietikon was finally started on February 8, 1912.

After almost a hundred years of operation, extensive renovation was necessary. In 2008, as a preparatory measure, the submerged parts of the bridge piers were examined for possible damage. The condition was assessed as good; minor damage had no impact on the structure of the structure. After the planning announcement in 2009, the Federal Office of Transport issued the renovation permit in 2010. The work took place from January to October 2011 and cost 7.8 million Swiss francs; During this time, rail traffic was idle on weekends.
