Railway accident in the Estación Once de Septiembre
The railway accident at Estación Once de Septiembre in Buenos Aires was when a train crashed into a buffer on February 22, 2012, killing 51 people and injuring at least 703.
Starting position
During the morning rush hour, train No. 3772, with about 1,000 passengers , drove from Moreno towards Estación Once de Septiembre - a terminus in Buenos Aires. The train was the eight-part local railcar No. 16 of the Trenes de Buenos Aires railway company .
the accident
When entering the station , the train's brakes partially failed ; it entered the terminus station much too fast at 50 km / h. Many travelers had already walked forward on the train to be closer to the exit on arrival. The train hit the buffer stop at 8:33 a.m. at about 25 km / h. The first segment of the railcar was dented and damaged. The following two cars were pressed together and pushed into one another. Most people died here too. Many were injured by flying pieces of metal and shattering windows. Car roofs were cut off from the body of the train. The engine driver survived the accident with injuries.
consequences
51 people died in the impact and at least 703 were also injured. This was the third worst railway accident in the history of Argentina , only exceeded by the railway accident of Benavídez (236 dead, 368 injured) and the accident of the Estrella del Norte on February 25, 1978 with 55 deaths.
The Argentine President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner , the Mayor of Buenos Aires, Mauricio Macri , and the Governor of the Province of Buenos Aires , Daniel Scioli , declared two days of national mourning and canceled the festivities of the Summer Carnival .
For the Trenes de Buenos Aires railway company , this was the second serious accident with fatalities within six months, after eleven people died in an accident at Flores train station on September 13, 2011. A bus and two trains were involved in this accident. Due to the accident in the Estación Once de Septiembre on May 24, 2012, the railway company's operating license was withdrawn and railway operations were put under state management. Since then, it has been carried out by the Unidad de Gestión Operativa Miter Sarmiento (UGOMS) on both lines previously operated by the railway company .
A large number of employees of the railway company and the traffic administration were indicted in a criminal court. Prison sentences were imposed on 21 defendants , including the former head of the railway company, Claudio Cirigliano, nine years, the engine driver three and a half years, the former transport minister Juan Pablo Schiavi eight years, and his predecessor Ricardo Jaime six years.
