The Benavídez rail accident was a rear-end collision that occurred on February 1, 1970 at around 8:30 p.m. in Benavídez, north of Buenos Aires , Argentina . In various sources, 142 to 236 deaths are named, and 368 injured. This was the worst railway accident in Argentina's history .

Starting position

The two trains involved in the accident were on a route operated by the state-owned Ferrocarril General Bartolomé Miter (FCGBM). There was no automated route safety . The accident took place at route km 36.

The preceding train was the local train 3832 from Zárate to Buenos Aires with 700 passengers in 10 cars , most of them day trippers on the way home. The train's diesel locomotive had a problem with its diesel injection system and was therefore stranded on the open road a little south of Benavídez station.

The following train, No. 1016, was a mixed long-distance train of 21 cars that was pulled by two diesel locomotives. About 500 passengers traveled in it. He came from San Miguel de Tucumán and was on his way to the Retiro train station in Buenos Aires.

the accident

Although the first train had been standing still for 40 minutes while the locomotive crew tried to rectify the fault, the train's crew failed to secure it at the rear. When visibility was poor, the following train from Tucumán collided with the stationary train in a terrain that was also difficult to access at around 100 km / h. Its last car was completely smashed by the two leading locomotives of the second train. The penultimate car was pushed almost completely into the car in front of it, the front train was pushed almost 80 meters forward by the impact. All of the dead and most of the seriously injured had been passengers on the train in front.
