history
The area around Moreno was populated by the Querandí at the time of the Spanish conquest of America . In 1527, the Italian explorer Sebastiano Caboto was the first European to come to the region. The Querandí were decimated by the Conquistadores through several military campaigns .
In 1860, the Estación Mariano Moreno station of the Buenos Aires Western Railway opened in an area that was then part of Luján . The station was named after the Argentine patriot Mariano Moreno. Almancio Alcorta , the owner of the Paso del Rey farm , had donated the land on which the station was built and was able to profitably sell the adjacent land on which a new location was being built. A newly built parish church was consecrated in 1865, and in the same year eight new partidos were set up in the province of Buenos Aires , one of them Moreno, formed from areas of Luján and Pilar . It also included the Cuartel IV settlement . In 1878 General Rodríguez was removed from the Partido Moreno , and in 1889 General Sarmiento (today San Miguel , Malvinas Argentinas and José C. Paz ).
Since 1997 Moreno has been the seat of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Merlo-Moreno .
In 2009, the Moreno State University (UNM) was founded on the site of the former Mercedes-de-la-Sala-y-Riglos Institute .
Culture and sights
In the city center you can see the Mariano Moreno monument. It was built in memory of the Argentine participant of the first junta after whom the city was named. It was built by the Italian sculptor Pietro Costa . Inaugurated in 1877, the monument is considered the first to be built to commemorate Moreno.
Opposite the Mariano Moreno Square is the stately cathedral, which was inaugurated on November 5, 1865. It was built by the French architect Victor Davout. The cathedral burned down in 1950, which is why its structure and architecture were modified several times. It used to have an altar made of pine wood on a pedestal made of carob wood. Several pictures, ornaments and pieces of wood were lost during the fire. The architect Eduardo Galeazzi, who made the final changes, added the arcade gallery, altering the original lines.
In addition to the town hall, inaugurated in 1912, which was built by Adolfo Forcella in the style of that time, the Leopoldo Marechal municipal theater operates . The city also has a fine arts museum, the Museo de Bellas Artes Manuel Belgrano .
In the Alcorta district is the Amancio Alcorta Museum, which was declared a Historic Monument of the Province of Buenos Aires in 1969. It was named after the politician Amancio Alcorta , who owned the site on which the museum is located. It contains a collection of objects about the history of the Partidos Morenos.
The Florencio Molina Campos Museum, which belongs to the foundation of the same name, has existed since 1979. The Argentine painter Florencio Molina Campos lived in the Partido from 1932 to the 1950s. The museum building was built in the typical colonial style of the Cascos der Estancias in the province of Buenos Aires in the first half of the 20th century. Works and objects that belonged to the painter are exhibited here.
population
Before the arrival of the Spaniards the area was inhabited by the Querandí. In the early 20th century, migrants came from Europe (mostly Spanish, Italian and French) who then made up more than half of the population.
