The Akkavare railway accident on Wednesday, March 28, 1956, was one of the worst railway accidents in Swedish history. In the collision of two trains, 16 people died and another 10 were injured.

Starting position

The Inland Railway is an approximately 1300 kilometer long railway line from central to northern Sweden. In the northern part, the railway line is only simply expanded. In addition to some train stations with greater traffic significance, there are a number of smaller unmanned stations. Akkavare train station was one of those small stations in northern Sweden.

In the timetable 1956 crossed in Akkavare schedule the passenger 1041 (a railcar ) and the freight 8524. On the accident was that of Svenska Järnvägsverkstäderna built Schienenbus YBo6 839 used by Gällivare according Arvidsjaur than to drive train 1041 and then as a train 1044 to return to Gällivare .

The steam locomotive E2 1241 was harnessed to the local freight train . The freight train did not run every day, only on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. He drove from Arvidsjaur and served numerous smaller stations. The train had canceled the previous Monday.

the accident

The railcar left Moskosel station with the written order issued by the local dispatcher in accordance with Section 100 of the safety regulations to continue on the route to Arvidsjaur with the crossing in Akkavare. The train driver forgot despite the written order that in Akkavare the local freight train was crossing. After the passenger change, he drove on without waiting for the freight train to arrive.

About 3.2 km west of Akkavare train station - at the end of a two-kilometer straight in a slight left bend - the railcar collided with the steam train. It is assumed that the railcar was traveling at a speed of around 70–80 km / h; the steam train is significantly slower. The steam locomotive caught the railcar and pushed it back 150 m until everything came to a standstill.

consequences

16 people died, including the driver of the badly damaged railcar, while the steam locomotive was only slightly damaged. An officer of the freight train ran to the next place to live, Lundbergssågen at what is now Norra Kikkejaur junction, and alerted the dispatcher in Arvidsjaur. The injured were taken to the hospital in Arvidsjaur and the garrison hospital in Boden .

Effects

The Statens Järnvägar canceled the anniversary celebrations for the 100th anniversary of its foundation.

The safety regulations were changed: Paragraph 100 (mockingly called "jungle paragraph" by the railway workers) only provided for train crossings at occupied stations. This reduced the number of crossing options on the 300-kilometer northern section of the Inlandsbahn from 26 to 12. In addition to the three stations that were permanently manned at the time (Porjus, Jokkmokk and Moskosel), the remaining stations had to be temporarily manned by a dispatcher if necessary.

The three-year-old railcar was scrapped in the main Örebro workshop in 1956. The steam locomotive, built in 1915, was repaired and continued to serve. Today it is still operational and is used by Arvidsjaurs Järnvägsförening for special trips, in the summer schedule every Friday and Saturday on the Arvidsjaur– Slagnäs route .
