Gomez Palacio railway accident

The Gomez Palacio railway accident was the collision of two trucks in Gómez Palacio near Torreón in the state of Durango in Mexico on September 23, 1955, both loaded with dynamite , with a train . At least 65 dead and 100 injured were the result.

Starting position

A mixed train from Torreón to Chihuahua was approaching a level crossing , which was approached on the road by two trucks, each with 4.5 tons of dynamite.

the accident

The drivers of the two trucks competed. They were so busy with it that they did not notice the train and drove into it at full speed. Both trucks exploded.

consequences

The explosion destroyed the locomotive and three carriages of the train, and numerous buildings several kilometers from the scene of the accident were also damaged. The crew on the locomotive and almost all the passengers on the train were killed. Other dead and numerous injured were among those who were in neighboring buildings. At least 65 dead and 100 injured were the result. There was no trace of the corpses of the truck drivers. The engine block of one truck was found 640 meters from the site of the explosion.
