Likeri railway accident

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In the Likeri railway accident on November 28, 2005, a bridge south of Kindu in the Democratic Republic of Congo swept people off the roofs of a train . About 60 people died.

Starting position

The few trains that run in the Democratic Republic of the Congo are often overcrowded, and the roofs are also occupied by travelers - often fare dodgers - and goods.

The accident occurred on the Kamina – Kindu railway , about 160 km south of Kindu, which roughly corresponds to the Likeri train station in the Maniema province . On its journey from Lubumbashi to Kindu, the Société Nationale des Chemins de fer du Congo train crossed a bridge over the Lufubu River , a tributary of the Lualaba . Its current is very strong at this point.

Accident

The accident happened around 9 a.m. When the train passed the steel bridge, its superstructure swept numerous items of luggage and travelers stored there from the roofs of the locomotive and the wagons into the river, presumably because the luggage had been piled higher than normal. Around 60 people died and an unknown number were injured.
