Livraga railway accident
In the railway accident at Livraga in Italy, early in the morning of February 6, 2020, a Frecciarossa train derailed on the high-speed line from Milan to Bologna at a speed of 292 km / h. Two people died. It was the first railway accident on the Italian high-speed network.
Starting position
Infrastructure
In Livraga there is a depot that enables overhauls and an office for track maintenance. The maximum permissible speed on the main track is 300 km / h. Before the train passed through, technicians had carried out maintenance work on point 5 and partially replaced the point machine.
train
The Frecciarossa with the train number AV 9595, which was led by the multiple unit no. 21 of the ETR 400 series , was on the high-speed line Milan – Bologna from Milano Centrale in the direction of Salerno . The train used the left track in the direction of travel, as is customary in Italy, as the railway operated double-track lines in left-hand traffic . Only 28 passengers traveled on that first morning train
The train driver had been informed by the operations control center that the control of switch no. 5 had been deactivated due to maintenance work, but that it had been set and bolted for driving straight ahead. It was signaled to the train that it could travel at the maximum permitted speed. He drove through Livraga station at 292 km / h.
the accident
The switch no. 5 was in a distracting position and was therefore not set for the intended route over the through track. It was allowed to be driven on in a distracting position with a maximum of 60 km / h, according to other information with 160 km / h. When the train passed them at 5:34 a.m. at 290 km / h, it derailed at km 166 + 252.
The leading vehicle first hit freight wagons that were parked on a track to the left of the direction of travel of the train and the continuous main track, turned 180 °, broke through a fence and came to rest on the side next to the building of the operations center. One of the bogies came loose and hit a building that damaged it. The rest of the train slid a few hundred meters away from the track in the gravel until the second car overturned and the train came to a standstill. All the other wagons stopped, albeit next to the track.
consequences
The two train drivers died, 28 passengers and 3 railway employees working on the train were injured.
The day after the accident, the unions called for a two-hour strike and asked the railroad companies to donate the amounts withheld from the strikers' salaries to the families of the two deceased drivers. That was granted.
The vehicles involved in the accident were recovered from February 16, 2020, and the route was open again from March 2, 2020. The leading car was only removed on April 10, 2020 after the prosecution's investigations had been completed.
Accident investigation
The public prosecutor in Lodi is investigating the accident, and the railway infrastructure company involved , Rete Ferroviaria Italiana (RFI), and the railway company ( Trenitalia ) have set up investigation commissions. You are investigating several people who were involved in the maintenance work for switch no.
The director of the National Agency for Railway Safety ANSF announced on February 13, 2020 that incorrect wiring during the nightly repairs could have incorrectly signaled a maximum speed of 300 km / h for this point setting . Therefore, the switch manufacturer Alstom will also be included in the investigation.
