In the railway accident at Vaibhavwadi on June 22, 2003, a train derailed between Rajapur and Vaibhavwadi stations in the Indian state of Maharashtra . 52 people died.

Starting position

A special train of the Konkan Railway Corporation with holiday travelers was on the Goa – Mumbai line of the Central Railway from Karwar to Mumbai . The visibility was extremely poor due to heavy monsoon rains and darkness. At Vaibhavwadi, the train drove through a tunnel that led to a cut in the rough terrain. A landslide had occurred here after the heavy rains : rocks and earth had fallen onto the railway line , which had not been noticed until then.

the accident

At around 10:30 p.m., the train's locomotive hit the rocks at considerable speed and was thrown off the track , as were the first three cars on the train. It happened so violently that the vehicles were destroyed. The last car of the train got wedged in the tunnel.

consequences

52 people were killed in the accident , 26 were also injured.

The area where the accident occurred was so remote that there were no residents who noticed the accident. It took hours before outside first aid was available. The scene of the accident was difficult to reach because of the poor road conditions, even for 150 soldiers from the army and with rescue vehicles . Even rescue trains were initially not be used because of the risk of further landslides. It took until the early hours of the morning until all the victims were rescued from the crashed train. These circumstances contributed significantly to the high number of deaths. Other parts of the embankment slipped after the wrecked train.
