Karwar ( Kannada : ಕಾರವಾರ Kāravāra , Konkani : कारवार Kārvār ) is a city in the Indian state of Karnataka with 77,000 inhabitants (2011 census).

Karwar is located around 520 kilometers northwest of Bangalore on the coast of the Arabian Sea, only 20 kilometers from the border with the neighboring state of Goa in the northwest of Karnataka. The city is the administrative seat of the Uttara Kannada district . Karwar is wedged between the mouth of the Kali River in the north and an extension of the Western Ghats in the south, which penetrate right up to the coastline and interrupt the flat coastal fringe.

Karwar has a natural harbor on the Kali estuary. Around 2.4 million tons of freight are handled here every year. The national highway NH 17 and the Konkan Railway , which connect Karwar with Mangalore in the south and Mumbai in the north, run parallel to the coast .

The main language in Karwar, like in neighboring Goa, is Konkani . As in all of Karnataka, the Kannada is the official language . Some Konkani activists in Karwar are calling for a connection to Goa.
