Ice cream factory (Strasbourg)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The former ice cream factory at 5 rue des moulins in Strasbourg is a listed building from the 17th century.

history

The building on the Ill canals in the La Petite France district of Strasbourg was originally used as a mill and then as a stick ice cream factory. After the establishment of the Gesellschaft für Linde's Eismaschinen in 1879, model systems for the preparation of 1000 quintals of ice bars per day were initially set up in Elberfeld - Barmen , Stuttgart , Munich and Strasbourg.

The conversion of the Dünzenmühle to an ice cream factory

The ice factory used the hydropower of the Ill and produced probably from 1897 or 1898. The structures on the property are, however, in part significantly older. The ice cream factory was enlarged in 1903 and 1912 and modernized in 1930. One of the preserved turbines dates from 1897. The technical equipment of the ice factory came from the Société Quiri in Schiltigheim .

The ice cream factory in the rue des moulins was known under the term “Klareiswerke zur Dünzenmühle”. Customers were merchants, brewers and private individuals. The ice cream factory was used as such until 1989 or 1990. The building was then converted into a hotel, with some of the technical equipment from the old factory being retained.

  2. According to some sources, the ice cream factory in Strasbourg is said to have existed before and there are quite different information about its history. On living-fine.de, for example, you can read that business people from Strasbourg set up the ice cream factory 300 (!) Years ago. On drinks.ch, in turn, the Dünzenmühle is referred to as the predecessor of the later ice cream factory; dating does not take place here.
