Ice ax (bar)
An ice pick ( English ice pick , German also bar ice pick , ice picker or ice crusher , very rarely ice cutter or Germanized ice pick , with the appropriate design also ice hammer ) is a kitchen tool and bar tool . It is used to crush pieces of ice or to loosen them from a larger block of ice ( stick ice ), and it can also be used to separate frozen ice cubes or lumpy crushed ice .

In German there is a name equality with Eispickel in the sense of the English ice ax as equipment of mountaineers, while the bar ice ax is referred to in English as ice pick . As Eispicker (alternatively ice claws) are also Eisrettungssysteme referred with which pedestrians can free himself from breaking into an approved frozen waters. In catering supplies, ice picks of various designs are usually sold under the name of ice picks , but occasionally also referred to as ice grinders , although hand-operated ice mills or electric ice crusher can also be meant. A mixed book from 1919 called the tools Eispocher : “The ice is crushed either by grinding in the ice mill, by pounding in a mortar, by pounding with an ice punch or a strong awl or by beating in a sack. The last type is not recommended for ice cream that is used for drinks, as sack fibers can easily get into the ice. ”In contemporary specialist literature, tools are called ice picks , and depending on the design, also ice hammers .
Types of construction and use
Larger ice axes have a metal end at the upper end of the handle, which is shaped as an attachment similar to a carpenter's hammer, i.e. with one flat and one pointed side. This design is similar to the ice axes used by mountaineers . Previously, such ice axes were mainly used to be handed down Blockice to divide that the cooling was used before electrically operated cooling equipment itself had prevailed. But they are also available in small form for use in bars and in the household, in order to use them to break up larger blocks of ice or to obtain pieces of ice for the preparation of cocktails .
Simple ice axes for household and bar use consist of a pin with a handle and in this respect are similar to an awl or a pointed iron . They are also suitable for dividing larger blocks of ice. To do this, the block of ice is first “pecked” several times along an imaginary straight line by driving lots of small holes into it until a groove emerges, along which the ice finally breaks into two pieces when repeatedly processed. To split the ice, you can also use a small piece of wood or a hammer and hit the handle lightly, so use the ice ax in a similar way to a pointed chisel . You can also use an ice pick to separate frozen ice cubes . This is important if the ice was "double-frozen", that is, if it was frozen again after it was removed from the ice cream machine - the temperature is then regularly just below freezing point - in order to store it or for a drink " on the rocks ”to cool longer. Even crushed ice, which thaws immediately when processed in an ice crusher , is frozen again and clumps together if it is not processed immediately. Likewise, purchased crushed ice must be loosened with the help of an ice crusher so that it can be processed.
Another shape are ice axes with several pointed prongs that are reminiscent of a fork . They can be used to punch several holes at the same time along the intended dividing line of an ice block, but they are also particularly suitable for loosening up crushed ice.
In Japanese bars it became popular in the 1990s to carve special shapes such as balls, diamonds or figures (so-called ice carving ) from larger blanks obtained from a block of ice with an ice pick , which then cool the finished cocktail in the guest glass. Various types of ice ax are also used to make ice sculptures .
Ice ax as a murder instrument

The bar ice ax as a murder tool gained greater notoriety through the 1992 film Basic Instinct starring Sharon Stone . In Haruki Murakami's novel 1Q84 , published in 2009, the protagonist Aomame also uses an ice ax as a murder weapon. The ice ax is also used as a murder tool in the film Bullitt .
An ice ax is also used as a stabbing weapon in the horror film The Descent .
This shape of the ice ax should not be confused with the climbing tool of the same name , which was used in particular for the murder of Leon Trotsky . It is precisely in this context that the same term is often used in English for both instruments ( ice-pick ).
