Ekkehard Foerster (born May 4, 1927 in Breslau ) is a German botanist and conservationist. For many decades he researched the plant communities of western German economic grasslands (meadows and pastures).

Life

Ekkehard Foerster was born as the eldest of five sons of the senior student councilor Friedrich Foerster and his wife Maria, geb. Liedl, born. After the family moved, he grew up in Danzig-Oliva , where his father was the director of the grammar school. He passed his school leaving examination in Kaufbeuren in 1947 . He then completed an agricultural apprenticeship and studies in agriculture at the University of Bonn , which he graduated with a diploma in 1952. On May 24, 1955, he received his doctorate there with the dissertation “A contribution to the knowledge of self-regeneration of permanent pastures”. It contains the first German studies on the diaspore bank of grassland soils. As an assistant to Professor Ernst folding Foerster soon made a name as a specialist for mapping business grassland on phytosociological basis.

In the following decades Foerster worked in the research center for grassland and forage production of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia in Kleve -Kellen, then in "Department 4, Grassland and Agroecology" of the State Institute for Ecology, Landscape Development and Forest Planning ( LÖLF ). During this time, he and his colleagues took around 15,000 vegetation photographs, mainly in commercial grassland. For the practice of grassland mapping, this work has not lost its relevance.

For many years, Foerster was in charge of the Lower Rhine regional office for floristic mapping on a voluntary basis . Because of his extensive knowledge of West German flora, he was co-author of the North Rhine-Westphalian flora list and the red list of fern and flowering plants.

In addition, Foerster created and improved practicable identification keys for difficult to distinguish representatives of many native species groups, for example the genera Allium , Carex , Juncus , Eleocharis , Rosa , Trichophorum and Veronica .

Foerster is one of the founding members of the Society for Research into the Flora of Germany .
